Surfers hit waves with crazy costumes in Newport Beach

Laurie McCulloch’s long red wig weighed heavy on her head, covering her face as she caught a wave.

“Oh man, I couldn’t see anything,” she said, her Sally from “Nightmare Before Christmas” costume drenched. “I couldn’t see anyone next to me.”

Her husband Ben’s costume – Jack Skellington – lasted about half a wave.

It was a monster mash out in the lineup in Newport Beach early Saturday, at the sixth annual Blackies Classics Longboard Association Annual Halloween Costume Expo.

“It’s just a get-together, people go out and surf in costumes,” judge Bill Spurgeon said. “There’s no entry fee. It’s just something to bring a little life to Newport Beach on Halloween weekend.”

More and more costumes hit the water each year, with elaborate and creative get-ups that have spectators cracking up on the sand.

This year didn’t disappoint. There was Bart Tucker dressed as a dog, tandem surfing with his dog Naya. Then there was Maddie Pittler, 10, and best friend Lex Perry, 9, who dressed up with bright blue wigs and red thermals, with signs that read “Thing 1” and “Thing 2” on their chests, characters from Dr. Seuss books.

This year, more than 50 decked-out surfers were catching the few waves that came through – the surf was small but conditions clean, perfect for not shredding up the costumes and mellow enough for kids to take on waves.

There were plenty of party waves happening, with the Green Lantern jumping on a panda bear’s wave, monsters crashing into each other, and hula girls giving a little shake while making their way toward shore.

Andy Matsuyama, 21, was feeling pretty with his coconut top and grass skirt hula girl costume.

“I think I’m gonna have too much fun. (The skirt) is gonna have to come off,” he said.

Sure enough, it wasn’t long before he had the skirt around his head instead of his waist.

Chris Grim, of Fullerton, had people cracking up, dressed as a green beer bottle.

“I wish there were more waves. It was fun,” he said. “It’s beer time now.”

Instead of brew, people were treated by the Blackies crew with pancakes, sausage, coffee and doughnuts to warm them up after they got out of the chilly water.

The McCullochs, who started surfing last year, came down to watch from the sand, and vowed to come up with creative costumes this year.

“We were trying to figure out what we could wear with a wetsuit,” Laurie McCulloch said. “This is so excellent that Blackies does this. It’s so super.”

Added Ben McCulloch: “This is fantastic. Just to see all the creatures on a wave is wild.”
