U.S. Open of Surfing announces music acts

June 24th, 2011, 12:13 pm · · posted by

The largest free concert you’ll find on the beach will go down at the Nike U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington in August, and organizers of the event have just released the names of the acts expected to show.

Last year, it was a huge surprise when Hurley announced Weezer would take the sandy stage – and it was a great show and (surprisingly) all went down without a hitch.

This year’s musical line-up “is a representation of today’s youth culture.” The performers are: psych-pop rockers MGMT, platinum-selling rockers Jimmy Eat World and Swedish electro/rock sensations The Sounds.

The 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing kicks off on July 30 and runs through Aug. 7. More than  500,000 show up for the 14-acre festival on the south side of Huntington Beach Pier, whether it be for the surf, skate, BMX, music, fashion or art.  Check out more at www.usopenofsurfing.com.

Here’s a bit more from the announcement:

The series will also include sets by the most buzzed-about names emerging on the music scene this year: Surfer Blood and Dead Country.

“We’re pretty excited to come to Huntington Beach for the US Open of Surfing.  Our advice to everyone:  Drop out with MGMT, drop by for MGMT, but just don’t drop in on MGMT,” said MGMT’s Andrew VanWyngarden.

“It’s fun bringing some of the best musicians in the world to the US Open of Surfing,” says Hurley’s Director of Music and Entertainment Marketing Greg Teal. “It doesn’t get much better than hearing your favorite band perform live on the beach.”

Known as the world’s largest youth culture and action sports festival, the Nike US Open of Surfing will feature daily concerts Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 4-6, at the conclusion of the surfing competition.  All concerts are free and open to the public.
