Newport Beach car break-ins
January 9th, 2011, 8:03 am · · posted by Kevin Sablan
If you happen to surf along the stretch of coast between Orange Street and River Jetties then listen to this: Surfline recently mentioned that it was informed by the Newport Beach Police Department about several cars being broken into along Seashore between Orange Street and RJ’s.
So if you’re one of the many surfers who stashes your keys on your car…don’t do it. Put your key in your wetsuit pocket or in the little pocket on your leash.
Meanwhile, a Newport Beach lifeguard mentioned that a handful of people who put their car keys on their towels or in their backpacks on the sand while in the water, also had their cars broken into and their wallets stolen.
We wonder if it could be the same guy that has been breaking into cars in Huntington Beach. That warning came out a few days ago, with this image of the suspected thief caught in stores after he tried to use the stolen cards. Click here to read more about those break ins and to see more images.

Great article and thanks for the heads up!
What happened to the OC Register? So many online articles are FULL of typos and mistakes. This article is typical. What exactly does “Police if it could be the same guy who was breaking into cars in HB” mean. No proofreading, no follow up articles on important stories. Somebody gets shot at a motel in CM and two people get arrested a week ago and no names? People get killed in car accidents and weeks later no names and no follow up? Gotta go to the L.A. Times for more info? Get it together. However, if I want to find out who was giving something away free LAST MONTH, this its the first place I check.
Hey Michael, sorry about the typo – we do sometimes make mistakes, and it is mostly because we are trying to get the info out to our readers as quick as possible. And in fact, this is a follow up to a very important story that impacts our local surf community. Hope you keep reading!
spend the extra 2 minutes to proofread. i doubt anyone will mind.
@Michael – Do you have to complain at everything that is wrong? Is your so pathetic that you have to try to put others down by trying to find anything wrong with their work? Do you also complain at restaurants that you need round coasters, not the square ones? I’d be shocked if you have any friends or family that care about a loser like yourself.
Looks like a typical HB bro to me….sad
LOL!!! So True…
They need to find this dude and snap his arms.
Wow, i just saw that guy at a restaurant the other day, his red goatee caught my attention! Except iono maybe not, the guy looked bigger and meaner, he didn’t have sun glasses and was bald.
I used a ziplock bag for my car key because it could not get wet, and kept it in my wetsuit or board shorts. Since I have a BMW with lots of buttons on the key, I double bagged it when I scuba dive.
They also now have magnetic key holders with a combo lock so you can put it under your fender, but someone would need to know the combo to get the key.
I’ve seen this guy downtown & also around the town plenty of times when ive surfed or just hangin out. definitely gonna keep my eye out for this punk!!
As I mentioned in previous article: Get a lock box (the kind they use at Open Houses). You can pick one up at Lowes or Home Depot (Master Lock makes a nice sized one). My key is locked to my permanent racks, but you can also lock onto tow rings, etc on car chassis. Can only be accessed through a combination. Plus, mine is in full view, so no one could really even try to pry it off or open it. Works wonders! Magnetic boxes sometimes disappear….
These are the typical people who wear Hurley.
WHAT A LOSER. I HOPE THE POLICE DOG BIT HIM FIRST BEFORE ARREST
Lol! That’s police brutality then.. ^_^
Once upon a day in HB it was advisable to just leave your car unlocked so that you wouldn’t suffer a broken car window during the inevitable break-in.
This looks like more white on white crime.
I hope some surfers catch this d-bag instead of the cops.
The PD should leave a set of keys out for this punk. And just sit back and wait.
No biggie,
I had my car broken into and my wallet stolen at NewPort beach 45 years ago
I have a feeling he stole that hat!
It’s a long time problem surfers have been dealing with. I hope they catch him soon.
Ditto Ler.
OC Register/LA Times no matter the online news source I think the writers are more worried about who gets the news out there first. It’s unfortunate that technology can expedite news, but cause writers to forget mundane things such as proof reading.
