
OC Surfers of the Year and Hall of Fame awards

A big thanks to Huntington Surf and Sport for letting the OC Register be a part of the Surfers’ Hall of Fame with our OC Surfer of the Year awards, both held today in front of a crowd of surf icons on the corner of Main and PCH.
Register reporter Gary Warner wrote about the event in a story to come out in tomorrow’s paper. Here’s a snippet:
A trio of surfing greats shared the stage with four rising stars of the sport Friday across the street from one of the world’s most famous beaches.
Randy Lewis, Ian Cairns and Stephanie Gilmore were inducted into the Surfers’ Hall of Fame at Huntington Surf and Sport (HSS). Brett Simpson, Courtney Conlogue, Joe Aaron and Trevor Thornton received their awards at the same ceremony for being the top vote getters in the 2010 Orange County Surfer of the Year contest.
The awards were handed out before a standing room only crowds gathered around the statue of legendary Hawaiian surfer Duke Kahanamoku at the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Main Street in front of HSS.
“The sport of surfing has kept us super stoked,” said HSS owner Aaron Pai in opening the ceremonies. “We truly have the greatest sport on the planet.
