There’s no doubt the beaches will be trashed with the hundreds of thousands of visitors gearing up to flock to the coast for the holiday weekend, which will kick off the summer season.
If you want to do your part to help, Surfrider Huntington Beach chapter will be hosting a beach clean up at 11th street in Huntington Beach on Saturday.
And if you need a little extra incentive – skate/surfwear company Volcom will be giving away goodies to the first 200 people who show up.
Some of the swag includes socks, posters, stickers and a re-usable denim tote bag.
Organizer Seth Mason has been working closely with local surf companies, which have stepped up to sponsor clean ups throughout the year.
The more help, the better, Mason said.
“Basically, if anyone shows up and picks up 10 pieces of trash, they will save a bird or fish,” he said. “The beaches and oceans are filled with trash. The birds and animals will eat the trash, because they don’t know the difference.”
Not to mention: “It also cleans up the beach and makes it look nice.”
This is the first time a clean up has been held at 11th street, which is located north of the Huntington Beach Pier. They are expecting more than 300 people to show. The clean up runs from 8 a.m. to noon. Parking is free on all numbered streets, but bring lots of quarters to park on Pacific Coast Highway.
Check in at the blue Surfrider tent. Bags, gloves & hand cleaner are provided. Gardening gloves from your own home work also. Certificates of completion provided, if needed. Large groups welcome.
