Surf fans bummed about KROQ taking Fig off the air

For more than 25 years, Rick “Rockin’ Fig” Fignetti had his routine.
Wake up in the early morning hours, check out the ocean, then call into the radio station KROQ to let countless listeners know whether it was worth heading toward the waves.
The long-time radio surf forecaster – who started the job before the sport of surfing was even mainstream – is no longer doing the on-air surf report because the station switched to automated online forecasts.
Local surfers and fans are bummed that Fig’s upbeat voice is no longer waking them up during his 30-second radio spot, the departure leaving a void in people’s early morning routines.
“Surfing is bigger than ever, and I can’t believe they took him off the air,” said listener Bob Kizanis, who listens to the report during his morning drive. “We have to let them know that this is a tremendous mistake for their station.”
Some local surfers have called in or e-mailed the station, bummed that they get what seems like a blanket response.
Kelli Hulsebus growing up in Huntington – where so much has changed – and her one constant over the years was Fig’s voice over the radio.
The body surfer said that Fig is someone she has learned to count on.
“I don’t know the reasons behind taking him off,” she said. “I just can’t see justifying removing him.”
Fig first got into the surf business after making boards for Chuck Dent, and soon had his own shop. His location is on Main Street in Huntington Beach.
Fig’s voice is a staple in the surf world, where he keeps crowds entertained for days at contest such as the U.S. Open of Surfing for hundreds of thousands of fans.
He started the surf reports after one of the old disk jockey’s wanted to learn how to surf about 26 years ago. Fig was asked if he would do an early morning surf report, and he quickly got the hang of it.
For those who always wondered where his name came from, it was a nickname given to him by Chuck Dent, when his friend saw Fig dancing on a countertop. He said “you’re rocking, Fig.” It just stuck.
Fig helped introduce the sport to the mainstream, giving listeners who don’t know much about the sport a bit of water-cooler fodder they could use in the office – the latest surf contest results, or if world champs like Kelly Slater were in town.
Later this year, Fig will be honored with the Local Hero award at the Jack’s Walk of Fame during the U.S. Open of Surfing. He is still very active in the surf community, competing and usually placing well at various contests along the coast. But most days he can be found surfing the north side of the Huntington Beach Pier.
Fig knows that times change, but we wanted to at least thank him for his decades of keeping us stoked, and for his impact on the sport of surfing.
“It’s a little sad not getting up in the morning to give the report to everyone,” he said. “But hey, it feels good to sleep in.”

This is an OUTRAGE!!!! KROQ, you have lost and sold your soul to a heartless corporate leech. RICK FIGNETTI surf reports were accurate, entertaining, and FUN! Bring back the surf report from a real surfer, not an automated voice message system.

Bad policy move KROQ… Losing Fig’s surf report on KROQ will cost lots of listeners in the morning that are on the drive and don’t have Internet access. The KROQ Surf Report with Rockin Fig has been a cornerstone for Southern California surfing for almost 30 years and a great asset for KROQ. I was stoked to hear he will still be working for you online, but it won’t’ be the same and a loss for KROQ and your listeners.

I used to listen to his reports every morning. Times change i guess. That is too bad the next generation won’t get to hear him.
I have also grown up with Figman on the radio since the early 80′s, KROQ used to be the different type of station on the radio and Figs voice was part of that. I will miss that, too bad for the bad decision KROQ has made….again its all about money in So.Cal and I’m sure this is too. Fig put a cool personal touch on the surf report and A lot of people are going to miss that…..but do you think KROQ cares about that?……NAAWW. CHEERS FIG…SEE YA IN THE WATER BRO!!!!
The end of an era, but time to move on. KROQ will not lose any listeners (you can’t make me believe that they only tuned in for the Fig’s 15-30 second spots). I don’t believe anyone in this listening audience is now going to listen to Mark & Brian…

Surfing has been mainstream for a lot longer than 25 years, dude. But I agree with everything else.
KROQ’s turned real lame … no longer the cool voice of Southern California. I tried listening to it tonight but turned it off after a couple of minutes.
This guy was my neighbor back in 1984, beach condos at 711 PCH.
From our first meeting he reflected a down to earth attitude.
Just like the, “Poorman,” I had no idea of his following, only his positive vibes directed towards me and all other occupants of that complex.
When the city sold Lake Street to a developer, Fig and his family moved.
I lost him back in 1986, today now know how we felt.

I feel sorry for the guy even though I’m not a surfer anyone losing their job has to be a big blow. However I haven’t listend to KROQ since the late 90′s for me it has ceased to be relevant or cutting edge. They rely on playing flavor of the month bands. In my honest opinion KROQ is a cutting edge as spoon. R.I.P KROQ IT”S TIME FOR YOU TO GO!
KROQ used to be the voice of so cal, now it’s lost it’s soul. it’s just another watered-down, corporate machine. that pumps out the same bile MTV does. that’s why i listen to my ipod and sat radio or my son’s ukelele.
Oh well KROQ keeps making one bad move after another. Thats why I dont listen to the station anymore. I think they have a record for playing the most Linkin Park songs in 1 hour. In fact I think thats just about all they play. And I can only hear Kat and Stryker name drop so many times before I want to throw my radio out.
Fig will be around. Another up and comer station will pick him up for the Fig surf report.
KROQ has become just another corporate machine, pimping out the pop-rock to the masses, just like every other corporate pop-rock station across the country. There is nothing unique, cutting-edge, or “Alternative” about KROQ, and losing Fig is just another step toward being just as common and generic as the rest. Very sad.
I feel the same loss that I felt when Indie 103.1 FM changed to Spanish-speaking Clown Music and dropped the OC Register’s own Beach Blogger: “Surf Junkie Jeff” (Malanca’s) spot-on “Newps” morning surf reports! I loved how I could just lay in bed and decide right then if it was worth going out, or just go back to sleep. It was so entertaining listening to Fig get all stoked about the morning sesh, and then I would too. I can still remember former KROQ DJ Richard Blade and Fig’s on air chemistry as they shared their pure Watermens’ stoke. I always look forward to his witty yet informative announcing at our various local surf contests too. I’m sure he’s made thousands of onlookers at the U.S Open of Surfing over the years want to just go out and learn to surf. I wish him all the best, and thank him for over 25 years of that infectious stoke!

If KROQ is indeed getting their automated surf reports from Surfline, can’t the owner of Surfline just prevent KROQ from making a profit by broadcasting the automated report? I’m a little confused here. Collins just commented (if that’s really him) that he is against taking Fig off the air. I also don’t know what the story means by “automated”. Is it some robotic computer voice, or are the hosts reading a script courtesy of Surfline? Either way this sounds like a bad deal, KROQ should do the right thing and put Fig back on the air.

The automated reports are RSS feeds that any website can grab of Surfline forecasts, they show as text not a voice … so because they are open to the public to use, Surfline can’t really prevent KROQ from using them.
He’s part of the radio station as every other character of the show. Letting him go just shows how irrelevant the show has become. I’m tired of KROQ.
My dad had been doing the surf report on KROQ since ive been born. so many of my friends used to listen to it and make jokes to me like..”KKKRAWKKK!”, “PEAKATOLAS”, or ” SUUURRFS UPP!” and wondered whether they should ditch school or not, just to go surf! On the way to school or work in the morning. no internet. no iphone. NO SURF REPORT!

Duuude We were wondering what happen to the report even when we knew we weren’t going surfing!!!! Surfings gone to the point where u just need to know how the waves are or else somthing is missing in ur day …. Not everyone wants to go on surfline and sit there trying to figure out where it’s epic we just wanna hear a 30 second report to start our day !!.. Online report that’s for surfline !!! Figster report is for the radio!!! Can’t take a apple and replace it with an orange doesn’t make sence !!!

Please tell me how exactly a computer is supposed to get me excited for my day when compared to Figster? Kroq you guys have made a HUGE mistake, should have cut Nicole Alverez because all that chick plays his commericial crap that I can hear on 98.7. Rockin fig rocks the reports. Hes the reason i get up (or stay in bed). Keeping Rockin figs surf report on KROQ is a must. This is socal were at the beach basically 24/7 but the few hours a day we aren’t we look forward to fig keeping us up on how it is. I no it sheds some light on my day when I’m at work knowing if there’s surf or not, and i know there’s a lot more people like me, then guys in suits in ties deciding if it fits there agenda to keep this going, but were out here and we want our report.

I am disappointed the report is not on the Radio any longer. I don’t want any internet report , I what the real thing Kevin and Bean RECONSIDER this . We live in Southern California were we can surf in the morning and snowboarding in the afternoon. This is our lifestyle!! Please put Fig back on the air….. You are pulling the soul out of this station slowly but surely! You’ve been around longer than most stations and there’s a reason, you are taking apart of that reason away – RECONSIDER!! I’ve been listening to Fig on KROQ b4 Kevin and Bean were even created. Figs surf reports are such a part of Kroq its sad to see him let go after all these years. Plus Fig is legendary surfer of Socal and makes Kroq look good. He just got inducted to the Surfers Hall of Fame on Main St. in HB. Good timing Kroq! Ok, nuff said… let back… Cool!

Seriosly? KROQ of all people, I never thought you guys would allow computers to do away with the human touch. I don’t turn my computer on to get the surf report, I turn the radio on while I get ready, and from there it’s KROQ throughout the day. If u force me to go to a computer, I will facebook, check emails, my accounts- bottom line… I’ll never get in the water or turn ON the radio. PUT FIG BACK ON, don’t let money stray you from the finer things in life.

i understand that the economy is & has been going through tuff times,now that being said,there are ingredients to spectacular dish,great trios,& a good surf trip,but when one of the key elements are not added you can tell the difference-you taking fig off in the am for the sake of saving a few bucks ??? thats like ordering a double double & getting nothing but lettuce & raw onions.stick with what the company grew up with & more so who we grew up with . please question your belief – jack fm is a great alternative.& now i shall share my thoughts

Setting aside the great music KROQ provides, I am very disappointed regarding the decision to remove Legendary Figg off the air. Quite frankly, I might as well just stop listening to KROQ all together. Lets see how your sponsors hold up when everyone finds out about this!! Sure the average person with a little competency can just as easiy look up on the internet to find out the surf report, but that is ignoring the principle in which gives KROQ a unique tradition.. AND it is not a good enough reason to give more air time to Kevin and Bean. I my most humble opinion, please reconsider.

H not only has the last REAL surf shop ON Main St. in HB, but he’s been doing the surf report for your station for what, 25+ years? I was a grom when Fig was doing the surf report from Chuck Dent Surf Center in the 80′s. Get it right. Get Fig back on the air and save your dignity from a poor business decision!

Jack from Jack’s over priced everything? Oh wait there is no Jack. I love that I can hear Fig in the morning and stop by his shop at just about any time of the day and catch him there. I’ve been listening to KROQ since 1979 and now, just like Fig, I won’t be hearing them on the radio any more. When you pull the plug on a guy like Fig, who loves what he does and lives for what he does, it shows what you’re all about.
KROQ blowing it. Rockin Fig was a needed break from the usual blabbering on the air. Fig took us away to the beach and hear about the waves. Classic radio takes you to other places. What were you thinking? Kevin and Bean need more time to talk or was it too hard to break away to someone else? Bad move.
It truly is a shame to take a classic legind off the air for whatever reasons; whether because of air time or monetary related issues, that KROQ has come up with. KROQ- make the right move and make countless people stoked by letting him broadcast the morning surf report again. You’d be gald you did.

Bring back the surf report!!! That was one of many things I LOVED about KROQ!!! The last thing we need is more mindless chatter in the morning!!! You guys are going to lose a lot of listeners that liked the station but primarily tuned in, during the morning, to hear the surf report!!! Fig is already a legend in his own time, he will be missed!! Might as well listen to Star 98.7 where they at least have more music and less chatter in the morning. You all just lost several listeners from this household!!
I understand reducing operating expenses but stripping away the great character of what made KROQ so recognizable is just unexceptable!

as long as i can remember ive been listening to figs surf report the way he tells it im sure not only amps me but every surfer in california gets us up and into the water and it was funny like the one time he saved that seal(arky barky) kept it in the shop and durring his reports u can hear arky barky barking away in the backround that would amp me more to surf man u guys r really screwing up his reports made that morning show popular since u took it off i dont even listen to kevin and bean any more!!!!!!! What is this Kiss FM? So many kooks in radio, it was cool to get a legit perspective from a real surfer. Bring Fig back! And nobody could say KROoooooQ, better than Fig, there was practically salt water coming out of my speakers!
Hopefully KROQ will realize their mistake and put Fig back. Maybe they didn’t realize how loved and respected he is and that the surf community would rally behind him. Fig is not just a surf report…He is like an old friend that we have all lost.

Bad, bad move on KROQ’s part! What… he doesn’t cost them anything other than a few short minutes of airtime. Who’s at their computer in the morning to check the surf report? Most people are just motivating for the day or are on their way to work & want to know what the surf/beach holds for them for that day or the next few days. Taking away Fig is like taking down the HOLLYWOOD sign!!!

So bummed Fig is a staple start to thousands of LA and Orange County Surfers mornings. He is also a well respected surfer, broadcaster, and local business man who has a positive influence on thousands of people. KROQ blew it, without Figs report I’m heading back to KLOS because at least Mark and Brian are Funny. Those 2 retards you guys have are stale and should be strung up by there toes and flogged to death with their own broadcast.
Fig has been doing surf reports for KROQ for as long as I can remember. He is the voice of HB and taking him off the air would be taking away a piece of HB from everyone. “This is laim”. We all “GREW UP” with his voice on the radio which would always put a smile on my face. I have been listening to KROQ for as long as I can remember but that has come to an abrupt ending. KROQ BLEW IT!!!
What is happening to radio? Every year it gets worse and worse. All we we have is memories of when KROQ was good, or radio, for that matter. Surfing is a big part of southern Californian culture. KROQ is also a big part of that culture. Getting rid of our legendary surfcaster is like taking a dump on our culture.
WTH KROQ? I don’t think you understand how much we all relied on Fig’s surf report. It was a great way to sit in traffic and decide if I’m going to ditch work/school to go surf. I know that was the only reason I listened to KROQ. Now it’s back to just rocking out to my cds.

ive known fig forever and he has always loved doing the surf report…it makes his day just to go and watch the surf and then get everyone all pumped to go out!! wow…i cant believe KROQ took that away from all of us..whats southern California without the surf report? or for that matter without surfing? does KROQ even know that almost all of their listeners are surfers and snowboarders? i guess not..lame…we want fig back!!

hey, i’ve been surfing with Fig since Frazier Smith was spinning the SEX PISTOLS on KROQ. I SURFED AND SKIED IN THE KROQ SURF AND SKI CLASSIC. i USED TO GIVE OUT THE HB SURF REPORT # TO CHICKS FROM THE 909 before it was 909 ! The point is, somethings aren’t meant to change, and living surf legends are few and far between just like legendary heard it first on KROQ! This is not an amicable break up for anyone!

Dropped my son off at school the other a.m. and right on schedule I hear FIG’S voice, but no, his voice telling me to check the website still. DENIED. Can’t do that in my car, Hearing the surf/snow report on the radio while I take care of a.m. biz tells me what my day will intail. DAMN YOU KROQ. get your heads out of your asses and get FIG back on the air.
