Jon Rose, a Laguna Beach pro surfer who has dedicated his life to bringing clean water to countries in crisis, is heading to Haiti today to help.

Rose is going to the devastated country with a group of medical professionals, and will be running the clean water operations. They are bringing thousands of filters and materials such as buckets, tarps and rope.

“My goal is simple: get clean water to as many people that need it,” he wrote in a blog post on his non-profit, Waves for Water.

If you recall, Rose was in Indonesia on a surfing trip last October when the 7.9 Padang earthquake hit, killing hundreds and crumbling the city. He happened to be headed toward Bali with water filters to bring villages clean water, when he changed course and helped in the early hours of the devastation, allowing relief workers access to clean water before international help had arrived. Rose had just returned from a Volcano Villages Project in Bali and the earthquake zone in Sumatra when the earthquake in Haiti hit, killing an estimated 200,000 and injuring an additional 250,000 people.

Rose said all donations received on the W4W Web site will go directly to the Haiti relief mission. He will be updating the blog as much as possible from the field.

The crew will try to capture tropical rain in tarps, then put it into buckets where a water filtration will help clean the water for both consumption, and for medical staff to use during procedures.
