Machado put a huge wrench into things earlier this week as he took out Joel Parkinson, who was leading on the World Tour, and Taj Burrow, who was ranked fourth.
Machado is not on the tour, but entered because his sponsor Hurley gave him a spot.
“They were nice enough to let me come splash around with these guys,” he said. “It was an honor.”
The waves are tough for competitors today, especially as the tide rises.
“It was really slow out there,” he said. “In the end, Dane surfed really well. I saw him do a couple of airs.”
Reynolds said it wasn’t easy to get into the waves.
“Trestles isn’t pumping today,” he said. “But I’m stoked to have another opportunity.”
Whether Machado will continue to compete is unknown.
“I just take it as it comes.”

Kelly Slater was up right after Machado’s heat, and barely made it through with a point difference of .33. Slater has a stellar record when it comes to this contest, having won it three times in the past, including the last two consecutive years.
