Surfline: Big surf expected later this week

January 13th, 2009, 9:00 am · · posted by

Surfline.com forecaster Kevin Wallis gives us a look at how the waves are looking this week:

Excellent conditions but small surf will show along Orange County beaches for the next couple days. High pressure over the Western U.S., sunny skies, warm weather and offshore morning winds today will continue through the second half of the work week.

Weak onshore flow will pick up each afternoon.  A small, Northwest swell will produce 1-to 3-foot surf (ankle-waist high) at the better exposed breaks both Wednesday and Thursday, before we start to see rise in size later this week.

Going out a little further out, our surf looks quite a bit larger thanks to an intense storm that was recently north of Hawaii. This swell will slam the Hawaiian Islands Wednesday and Thursday with 20-40 foot surf; while Orange County won’t be nearly as big as Hawaii when the swell hits our shores, we will see the largest surf of 2009, along with favorable wind conditions.

Stay tuned to Surfline.com for all the latest details on this upcoming swell, have fun and be safe out there!
