Largest surf of the year may also bring flooding to coastal areas
December 2nd, 2007, 11:49 am · · posted by Laylan Connelly, staff writer
A massive swell expected to show up on the Orange County coast Tuesday could be the largest seen all year – good news for experienced surfers itching for some end-of-the-year waves.
But the big waves may not be such a welcomed sight for homeowners in low-lying areas-such as Seal Beach, where large surf combined with extreme high tides can cause flooding.
The most dangerous time will be Wednesday morning, when a high tide of 5 feet, 6 inches is supposed to hit at 6:10 a.m., according to Surfline.com forecasters.
Southern California breaks could see anywhere from 6-to 10-foot faces, with some sets larger than 15 feet.
Forecasters expect this to be the strongest swell of the year – possibly larger than any swell last year.
More from Surfline.com:
While Southern California spots won’t see quite the surf sizes experienced north of Point Conception, the swell is very ‘west’ and will be able to show significant energy at many beaches.
Look for the surf to be on the rise all day on Tuesday, with the peak of the swell likely occurring late Tuesday through Wednesday morning.
West-facing harbor entrances will likely see breaking waves both Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons as the low tides bottom out around 0 foot each day.
Please keep in mind that this storm, and resulting swell, are still in the forecast stage and have yet to happen.

kooks stay home.
Surfing sucks don’t waste your time!
Bob Abooey, just remember to give thanks next time a surfer pulls your hodad behind out of a rip current. Better yet , do us all a favor and stay out of the water.
Bob, take the 91 to the 10 East. Keep going, and when you think you’ve gone far enough…keep going some more. once you reach a place where there are more people wearing cowboy hats than not, you’ve made it. Oh, and stay there this time!
Thanks Bob Abooey!
Keep telling everyone that, the lineup is too crowded as it is! I still long for the 70′s and the 80′s before “everyone” was a surfer.
Meanwhile I’ll catch one for ya!
Shaka Bro!
Is this a yearly occurance? Take pictures and post them.
Bob Abooey a bird just told me that surfing might suck in Newport but you swallow in Capistrano.
